Summer Equine Program Information

This special four-week summer program is available for animal science and pre-veterinary students, as well as those students who enjoy equestrianism. However, no previous equestrian experience is required. Students will enroll in two courses, Equine Anatomy and Physiology, and Equine Fitness. The achievement of these two units will give you 6 hours of US credit, fully transferable, towards your degree at your home University or College (see your own college advisor for confirmation. A Brief about credit transfer can be downloaded here). Official college transcripts will be given on completion of the program.

In addition to classroom instruction, students will be involved in practical and hands-on experiences, with the opportunity to discover equestrianism ‘British’ style, and experience both classical and English-style riding skills. The program works with the Scottish National Equestrian Centre, so if a professional event is held during the time of the program, students may assist with some preparation. The Centre has one international class indoor arena, a six-furlong all-weather gallop and an extensive acreage of good riding country where they annually host a British Eventing one-day-event. Please note there is a weight limit of 196 lbs to participate in the riding sessions.

Also included in this program are educational visits to several of the main cultural sites of Scotland and the internationally recognized Royal Highland Show.

*Due to limited availability, in all Scotland programs, there is a $500 holding deposit required. You will receive an invoice following your phone interview and this will be due upon receipt in order to confirm your place. The holding deposit is non-refundable.*

Hear From Our Candidates

I had an amazing time here. I learned a lot and had so much fun traveling around here. I had never ridden english before so this was all new. They were very patient with us. I came in with some equine A&P knowledge but I definitely was able to broaden that knowledge. Equine fitness was all new to me. I learned a lot about making a fitness plan to get a horse ready for different types of competitions.

This program was a lot of “firsts” for me. The classes were really hands-on and real-world applicable. The professors were really helpful and they made sure we were all happy and taken care of. My favorite parts were riding – I had only done some Western riding before so it was a bit of a change! I also liked getting the opportunity to ride several horses to fine-tune my own riding abilities and to gain more experience in riding horses with all varying personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. I’m really glad I got to come on this trip and visit Scotland and experience the culture.

My experience with this study abroad program was one of a kind! It is such a unique opportunity to be able to study abroad in a foreign country, both traditionally in the classroom and in the arena as well. The accommodations are great for the location and time you are here. The classroom instructors are well versed in their respective fields and are excited about teaching you as well as learning from you about different perspectives based on where you come from. I really enjoyed applying what we learned in the classroom to the horses in the barn, as well as getting to take a field trip and see first hand what a horse in a fitness program looks like. I would highly recommend this program to anyone interested in horses, riding, or an equine career!
