How many times a day do you wonder, “Man, I wish I was traveling,” or, “I wish there was a way for me to work abroad!” Truth of the matter is, you can! There is a way for someone like YOU to be able to work AND travel abroad – now, tomorrow, next week, next month or even next year! It’s a crazy concept and you might find it impossible, but don’t worry, we are here to help! Would you believe that it is possible for you to work abroad?
Well – IT IS! If you put your mind to it, the possibilities are endless!
Still not convinced? Yeah, it is scary going to country you may not have been to, but don’t worry. It’s your comfort zone screaming at you in fear – don’t be afraid. Life is about taking risks and being able to learn and explore this beautiful blue planet we are on. You just have to visualize and it will materialize. But before we send you flyin’ anywhere, let’s get down to the nitty gritty to going working abroad.
Why Should I Intern Abroad?
The job market today has become extremely competitive with recent college graduates struggling to find work they studied for and with the shift in global political views, technological advances and the ever changing planet we live on. Going abroad has become such an important aspect that employers are looking for someone who has been exposed to new places, languages, cultures and people.
Studies have shown that the benefits of those who study abroad include:
- Increased self-confidence (Black & Duhon, 2006; Chapman, 2011; Dwyer & Peters, 2004)
- Independence (Black & Duhon, 2006)
- Global dependency (Dwyer & Chapman, 2004)
- Open-mindedness and independence (Hadis, 2005)
- General personal development and well-being (Kuh & Kauffmann, 1984)
- To name a few!
Another study done by McMillan and Opem (2002), found that 70% of survey respondents who completed an internship abroad reported that their study abroad experience ignited an interest in a career direction. Just another reason why studying/interning abroad has become such an important factor when applying for jobs.
As you can see, it is important now than ever that not only students, but anyone wanting to study or work abroad should go! It is an opportunity that will last a lifetime and you gain skills that you won’t be able to learn in your hometown. Plus the skills you acquire or reinforce will help improve your future and your career! It’s something you shouldn’t pass up!

Top 5 Countries for Internships Abroad
Now that you may have an idea on what you might want to do abroad, it’s time to look at WHERE! Here are the top 5 locations for Adelante:
1) Spain
From the Royal Palace in Madrid to Park Guell in Barcelona to the historic Seville, Spain has got the b-e-a-u-tiful beaches, delicious food and (the glorious) siestas! Regardless of which city you pick, you’ll fall in love with España and THAT is a guarantee! Spain offers many fields of work, by selecting a city, you’ll have a better understanding of where you might want to go and what you might want to do for work.
Game of Thrones fan? Various locations throughout Spain have been featured in the critically acclaimed HBO series. From House Tarly to the Water Palaces of Dorne, Game of Thrones has surely taken over, but have no fear, winter is hardly an issue in Spain. No white walkers here! So winter isn’t coming…
2) Scotland
I hope you’ve brought your boots because Edinburgh is immersed in nature! Take on some breathtaking hikes or simply enjoy a picnic, regardless of what you decide to do, make sure you bring some warm clothes! Scotland offers two programs: Observation & Research and Equine Summer Abroad. Spots for the equine program fill fast and is one of our more popular programs, so you must act quicker than lightning to secure a spot!
Are you a fan of Harry Potter? If you answered yes, Edinburgh, Scotland will be your place to be. Edinburgh has the coffee shop where Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling, formed Dumbledore’s army. Plus scenery to die for with the Edinburgh Castle and the endless amount of green hills. It almost makes you want to run and twirl like Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music.
3) Ecuador
Our newest program location – Ecuador – offers an experience unlike any other at latitude 0 degrees! Nestled in the Andes, Quito is the first UNESCO Heritage site and is the highest altitude capital in the world. Your mission, should you choose to accept, explore the surrounding areas from the Galapagos Islands to the Amazon, explore our newest addition to the Adelante family! This unique and beautiful city has much to offer from marketing to teaching English, women’s/human rights to medical. You will be placed in Quinto, a historic but beautiful capital city. You’ll never run out of stuff to see and do! It’s no wonder people adore Ecuador!
4) Chile
No, not the restaurant with baby back ribs, we are talking about the beautiful (and with a better selection of food) Chile! Chile programs are offered in Vina del Mar and Valparaiso, cities both on the coast with geographical similarities to Southern California. Just minutes from the beach and a couple of hours to the snow. But be warned, sunscreen is a must here! The ozone and sun aren’t best friends here and we can’t have you looking like a tomato…
Want to explore? Head out of Valparaiso or head over to Easter Island (pricey but worth it) or even head off the grid to Patagonia! You can always drive a couple of hours toward the mountains to face plant in some snow! Whatever you’re looking for, Chile has much to offer! So it’s a given…go chill in Chile.
5) Uruguay
I’ve got one word and one word only, beach. I hope you love the beach because Uruguay has got the plenty of beaches. However, their seasons are flipped! So if you plan on traveling during summer (Northern Hemisphere) then prepare for some temperature drops! Montevideo is the city you’ll be placed in and it is truly a “loss for words” type of city. From the public artworks to yerba mate (tea), Montevideo has much to do for anyone looking for a good time. In the words of Nicki Minaj, “let’s go to the beach -each, let’s go get awayyyy.”
