Attention wine lovers! We have a brand new study abroad program just for you. This wine study abroad program combines Spanish language immersion with wine theory. The three-week program is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Chilean wines and the Spanish language.
The first two weeks of the program will include 20 hours of Spanish language immersion classes followed by 12 hours of wine theory and enology classes. Students will learn the Spanish language from experienced instructors and receive in-depth wine classes from a well-known enologist and wine educator at a local Chilean winery. Classes will be taught in an immersive environment to enhance language acquisition and cultural understanding. The course will cover various topics, including wine production techniques, wine tasting, winemaking, viticulture, and more. Wine theory classes will also include a Chilean cooking class with a guest chef on cooking with wine.
During the third week, students will visit several vineyards in the Casablanca Valley for observation and wine-tasting sessions. Throughout the program, students will also have the opportunity to participate in various cultural activities, including cultural tours and excursions to nearby cities.
*Please note the legal drinking age in Chile, as in most countries, is 18 years old. All candidates over the age of 18 are welcome to apply!

Wine Theory Course Description
Wine theory classes will consist of 6 classes totaling 12 hours. These classes will take place first 2 weeks of the program on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after Spanish classes.
Class 1 - Origin of the Grapevine
Introduction to the orgins of wine in Chile, valleys, grape varieties, & winemaking.
Class 2 - Introduction to Wine
Crash course on how wine & sparkling wine are made, wine chemistry, wine styles & varieties, effects of phylloxera, and Carmenere.
Class 3 - Wine Tasting
In this class, you will learn wine tasting techniques, Aromas & Organoleptic characteristics of the grape varieties, and Tasting of 5 different grape varieties with pairings.
Class 4 - Organic and Biodynamic Vineyards
Get insights into ecology & biodynamic agriculture of vineyards and differences in organic & traditional vineyards.
Class 5 - Wine Service and Sparkling Wine Production - Enotourism
In this segment, you will gain an understanding of wine tourism, wine service, social responsibility, wine storing, and wine legislation in different countries. You will also learn about sparkling wine including history of Don Perignon, how to elaborate sparkling wine with Charmat and Champenoise methods, elaboration of distillates, and tasting methods.
Class 6 - Chilean Cooking Class
In this final segment, you will get a cooking lesson on how to cook Chilean cuisine with Chef Francisco Guzman.

Can I participate if I am under 21 years old?
Yes you can! The legal age for responsible alcohol consumption in Chile is 18 years old.
Do I need to know everything about wine to participate?
No! This program is open to beginners as well as advanced wine enthusiasts. You will learn everything from the basics.
Can I participate if I do not speak Spanish well?
Of course! This program is designed for beginner Spanish speakers. In the program we include a Spanish leveling.
What is the weather like in Chile during this program?
The weather is a little cold during this time of year. There may be a little rain as well. July-August months are winter in Chile, and September is the start of Spring.
